About

DG Carpentry has been established since 1989.

Its proprietor, Duncan Gilby, trained at both Hertfordshire College of Building and Tottenham College of Technology, where he studied for four years and qualified with City and Guilds in the following subjects at basic and advanced levels:

He also obtained an Award of Merit in respect of an excellent work performance.

Between studying and setting up his own company Duncan worked for well known local Furniture and Joinery firms, where he gained experience in design, manufacturing and installation of free standing and fitted furniture and joinery. This included Kitchens, Bedrooms and lounge furniture.

In contrast to this, the work was as diverse as constructing and furnishing sound recording studios to restoration work.

DG Carpentry specialises in custom built furniture and joinery. Each item is designed in full consultation with you, the customer, and then built specifically to meet your needs.

DESIGN / ESTIMATE

The first step is to arrange an appointment at your premises when your requirements will be discussed and measurements taken as the basis for an estimate. You should then receive this within 7 working days of the initial visit. On acceptance of the estimate an approximate date of delivery/installation will be agreed.

MANUFACTURE

Every aspect of the transformation from raw material to finished article is carried out in D G Carpentry's own fully equipped workshop.

MATERIALS

You may choose from a wide variety of materials. These include solid timbers, such as Oak, Cherry, Beech and Maple; or you may prefer one of the modern composite materials such as plain or veneered MDF (medium density fibreboard) which are generally lower in cost and also have exceptional stability and resistance to warping. Samples illustrating the different options will be available for your inspection during the initial discussions.

FINISHES

Solid timbers can be lacquered/polished to enhance the natural colour and beauty of the wood itself, or, if preferred, can be stained to match or contrast with existing decor. Composite materials are more usually finished with a modern two component lacquer, which, not only provides water resistance, but is also exceptionally hard wearing.

Painted furniture, which has become very fashionable recently, is a speciality of D G Carpentry and can provide an attractive alternative to traditional wood finishes. A major advantage of paint finishes is the ability to choose any colour that will enhance, complement or contrast with existing or new decor. The paint used is very durable and is available in different levels of sheen from matt, through satin to high gloss. These very smooth finishes can only be achieved by building up several layers using a spraying process such as that used by D G Carpentry.
